Chapter Fifteen

The morning sun had barely begun to filter through the trees. Ryan stretched, twisted his aching back, and walked behind a tree to relieve himself. It had been years since he’d minimalist camped. He was thankful for the food and water Shandra had packed before they left. And that the nights, while being cool, weren’t the same as they would have been a month earlier.

Hawke had already left to inspect the trail on foot. When they’d stopped during the night, he said he thought they weren’t that far behind, but didn’t want to come upon them in the dark.

Digging in his pack, Ryan pulled out a bag of chocolate chip cookies and bit into one. The sound of trickling water had him wandering to his right. A two feet wide and six-inch deep stream sparkled and wandered through the trees. He knelt and scooped water with his hands. The sting of the cold water caused him to suck in air and pull his hands back. He’d forgotten how cold fresh snow melt could be. Steeling himself for the iciness, he scooped and splashed his face. If he hadn’t been awake before, he was now. It felt as if he’d dropped his face in a bowl of ice.

Dog appeared at his side, lapping at the water. The sound of snapping twigs and rustling of forest floor debris brought him to his feet. He glanced over his shoulder.

Hawke led the two horses to the stream. “Your horse needs water, too.”

The two animals put their heads down and drank thirstily.

Ryan realized he’d just lost points with the State Trooper for not thinking of his horse. “Sorry, I just followed the sound of the water to see what it was.” He took the reins to his horse.

“If you had carried him on your back, I would forgive you, but he carried you.” Hawke stared into the trees beyond the stream.

There were times with the State Trooper that Ryan felt like he was at the reservation with Shandra’s family. The way they said things held truth and at the same time it shamed him.

“Again, sorry. What did you find out this morning?”

“What I thought last night. I think our friend Rusk is lost. He follows every incline as though his plan was to go to the top of the mountain, but he doesn’t know where that is.” Hawke smiled. “We are less than a mile behind them. Mount up and we will overtake them soon.”

Ryan smiled back. He patted his Glock in his shoulder holster under his jacket. He’d grabbed the two items out of his duffel bag before they left the lodge.

Shandra woke, replaying Grandmother’s dream. The lodge had been filled with people. Some she’d recognized and some she hadn’t. They were looting the place while Dani and Clive were tied to trees watching. She didn’t know what it meant other than perhaps someone other than Doolie wanted the lodge and Dani and Clive had no knowledge of them. But who could it
